Markus Michael Schulz, founder and director of the Martin Luther King Memorial, inspired me from the beginning with the idea to show this exhibition at the Amerikazentrum. It was a perfect fit for our plans to organize something for Black History Month and to commemorate the 51st anniversary of Dr. King's death. It was carried out in collaboration with the Berlin Brandenburg Youth Organization.

The traveling exhibition displays text documents and images that have been researched and selected by Berlin schoolchildren. The exhibition depicts the life and work of King and makes the meaning and consequences of his visit to Berlin in1964 up to the present day tangible. Several members of the German Baptist community who were present at Dr. King's visit recall his impact. Furthermore, topics such as Christians in communist East Germany, racism, the civil rights movement, the German peaceful revolution in1989, black music, and discrimination in the education system are highlighted.
 
Numerous visitors who had witnessed this time left the exhibition visibly touched. It was also the positive reactions of the many students and teachers that made this event a complete success for everyone involved. Many commented on the relevance of the topics in today's society and how important such exhibitions are.
